Presentation - Social norm and behaviour change approaches to address corruption and tackle illegal wildlife trade

This resource summarises a practitioner-focused webinar exploring whether social norm and behaviour change (SNBC) approaches can help reduce corruption linked to illegal wildlife trade (IWT). While SNBC initiatives have shown promise in tackling corruption more broadly, evidence specific to IWT and wider conservation and natural resource management remains limited.

Claudia Baez Camargo (Basel Institute on Governance) and Gayle Burgess (TRAFFIC) presented findings from their study on the topic, covering what SNBC approaches are, their application to anti-corruption efforts, a framework for identifying entry points for behavioural interventions, and how practitioners can apply these insights to reduce IWT-related corruption. Sabri Zain (TRAFFIC) and Robert Lugolobi (independent consultant, Uganda) shared additional insights on applying SNBC approaches in programmes addressing corruption that facilitates IWT, with the panel moderated by Saba Kassa (Basel Institute on Governance).

The underlying study was produced in association with the Targeting Natural Resource Corruption (TNRC) project, which supported evidence-based anti-corruption programming to improve biodiversity outcomes across wildlife, fisheries, and forests.
