This resource introduces "Behaviour Change for Nature: A Behavioural Science Toolkit for Practitioners," developed by Rare's Centre for Behaviour & the Environment in partnership with The Behavioural Insights Team (BIT). It responds to the recognition that while people drive today's major environmental problems — including deforestation, overfishing, ocean plastics, and climate change — human behaviour also holds the key to addressing them.
The toolkit argues that traditional environmental approaches, such as regulations, taxes, fines, and awareness campaigns, remain valuable but incomplete on their own. It proposes expanding this toolkit with behavioural insights to help practitioners achieve more lasting conservation outcomes.
Comprising 15 behavioural strategies alongside numerous supporting case studies, the toolkit offers a set of proven and promising approaches for applying behavioural science to pressing environmental challenges. It is positioned as a practical resource for practitioners seeking to design more behaviourally- informed interventions that support both natural resource conservation and the communities who depend on them.
